PawProx was created due to industry demand for a service that will help detect brand and corporate identity theft. The PawProx service identifies web sites that contains wording or phrases similar to that of the actual site. The service runs once a month and reporting is done manually by a SensePost technical analyst. Due to a unique arrangement with a UK based company, SensePost has the ability to find web sites in any TLD (top level domain). This partnership further enables SensePost to find sites whose names are contained in the hostname portion of the URL.
Advantages
Many organizations are under constant attacks from corporate identity theft - yet few know about this threat. Less serious attacks are pranksters that create web sites that sounds similar to your organization (e.g. if your main brand is fxpbank they would register fxpbankplus) which they use to slander the organization. More serious is elaborate 419-scam type attacks in which Internet banking / E-commerce sites are duplicated and the victims are lured into parting with their credit card information or personal details. Many organizations only hear about the "spoofed" (copied) site after a customer has been tricked.
The primary PawProx function is to identify these sites before they can be used in such a scheme. PawProx has identified over twenty potentially dangerous sites and over ten deliberate and clearly malicious sites for our customers. This has resulted in legal closure of a number of these sites.
